Sailors man the rails as the USS Germantown (LSD-42) departs White Beach Naval Facility en-route to the Republic of the Philippines. The ship, homeported in Sasebo, embarked sailors, Marines, equipment and supplies in support of Operation Damayan. Operation Damayan is a humanitarian mission to assist the Philippine government’s relief effort in the wake of Super Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda. The Navy constantly trains with our Pacific partners including the Armed Forces of the Philippines for such occasions. Because of the long-standing partnership between the two nations, the U.S., working with the Philippine government, is able to rapidly respond with critically needed capabilities and supplies in times of crisis.
