Dredged material is placed near the upper San Joaquin River Sept. 17, 2013, about 40 miles northeast of San Francisco. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District performs yearly dredging in the Sacramento River Deep Water Ship Channel and the Stockton Deep Water Ship Channel to maintain authorized depths.
