Rct. Kyannie Alicea Cintron, Platoon 4002, November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, checks her weapon during the senior drill instructor inspection Nov. 23, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Alicea Cintron's senior drill instructor inspected her utility uniform for discrepancies and quizzed her on general military knowledge. Recruits may be set back at this point in training if they do not demonstrate they're ready to continue training. Drill instructors evaluate recruits on attention to detail, discipline, bearing and confidence during these inspections. Alicea Cintron, a 20-year-old native of Bayamón, Puerto Rico, is scheduled to graduate Jan. 24, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
