Rct. Damien Robertson, Platoon 1006, Alpha Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, holds the guidon during his platoon's initial drill evaluation Dec. 2, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. The guidon bearer is the base of the formation for drill movements. Drillmasters, experts on the Marine Corps Drill and Ceremonies Manual, grade recruits on their discipline, attention to detail and ability to correctly perform close-order drill movements. Robertson, an 18-year-old native of Syracuse, N.Y., is scheduled to graduate Jan. 24, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
