Lt. Cmdr. Michael Files, commanding officer of Navy Operations Support Center, Battle Creek, Mich., and Robert Valkner, the Battle Creek Navy and Marine centers project manager, display the HTP water heating system that supplies NOSC Battle Creek with hot water. The HTP water pump is digitally controlled, uses a solar glycol heating system to heat the water on sunny days and can switch to a gas fired heat source if inclement weather inhibits the solar array. NOSC Battle Creek is using solar water heating technology to meet U.S. Navy green energy goals to reduce pollution and save U.S. taxpayers' money that would be spent on daily energy needs.
