Rct. Christopher Lockett Jr., Platoon 3000, Mike Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, uses teamwork to climb up the last platform on a three-tier obstacle Jan. 9, 2014, during the Crucible on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits such as Lockett, 19, from Albany, Ga., were tested mentally and physically over the 54-hour final challenge before earning the title Marine. Mike Company is scheduled to graduate Jan. 17, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
