The course that stands today, which closely resembles the original version built in the mid-1960s, is comprised of 15 obstacles recruits must overcome using teamwork, strength and endurance. DaVilla, an 18-year-old native of Kennesaw, Ga., and Baker, an 18-year-old native of Morganton, N.C., attempted this course twice during training, once at the beginning and again near the end to gauge improvement. DaVilla and Baker are scheduled to graduate with Platoon 1000, Alpha Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Jan. 24, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
