Recruits of Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, prepare to swim 25 meters during their basic water survival qualification Oct. 7, 2013, at the recruit training pool on Parris Island, S.C. Water survival qualification, which is a graduation requirement, includes swimming 25 meters, treading water for four minutes, jumping into water from a 10-foot tower and shedding heavy gear while underwater. Recruits wear utility uniforms, including boots, throughout the evaluation. Golf Company is scheduled to graduate Dec. 6, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
