Staff Sgt. Angela Lopez, a drill instructor for Platoon 4008, November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, tells Rct. Cassandra Ellis, Platoon 4008, to grab hold of the rope she will use to descend the 47-foot rappel tower Jan. 21, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits wear helmets and harnesses as they rappel the tower by walking backward down a vertical wall or pushing themselves off a simulated helicopter skid and sliding down a rope to the ground. Recruits such as Ellis, a 17-year-old Decatur, Ill., native, may need these skills in their Marine Corps careers. Lopez, 34, is from Gulfport, Miss. November Company is scheduled to graduate March 14, 2014. (Photo by Cpl. Octavia Davis)
