Lance Cpl. Evan D. Kiefer, rifleman, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, and a 21-year-old native of Perry, Iowa, posts security on top of a bluff overlooking the beach at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif, Feb. 4, 2014. The maneuver was part of an amphibious landing conducted during the weeklong Marine Corps Combat Readiness Exercise. After more than a decade of fighting and training for land combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, infantry battalions within 1st Marine Division have reincorporated amphibious scenarios in their training events as part of the U.S. strategic pivot to the Pacific. The MCCRE offers crucial training that prepares the Marines for upcoming deployments around the world aboard U.S. Navy amphibious ships as part of Marine Expeditionary Units.
