An undated photo shows USS Petrel, a 4th grade gunboat. In April 1898, Petrel became part of Adm. George Dewey’s fleet in the campaign against Manila during the Spanish American War. Naval History and Heritage Command photo archives staff members are scanning a wooden box containing approximately 150 glass plate photographs depicting scenes from the Spanish-American and Philippine Wars.
