Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island

Rct. Joseph Clem and Rct. Joshua Lewis, both with Platoon 2028, Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, rappel to the bottom of a 47-foot tower Feb. 18, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Rappelling is a controlled descent on a rope and is used to help prepare recruits for deploying from helicopters, navigating difficult terrain and gaining access to buildings during raids – as well as overcome fear of heights. Clem, a 20-year-old native of Decatur, Ala., and Lewis, an 18-year-old native of Mahopac, N.Y., are scheduled to graduate April 11, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. Vaniah Temple)
