Sgt. Omy Maldonado, a marksmanship coach, speaks to Rct. Maria Gamez, Platoon 4011, Oscar Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, about her performance on the rifle range Feb. 25, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Coaches such as Maldonado, 23, from Bethlehem, Pa., help recruits hone their marksmanship skills. All recruits must qualify with an M16-A4 rifle in order to graduate and carry on the tradition that every Marine is a rifleman. Gamez, a 21-year-old native of Austin, Texas, is scheduled to graduate April 4, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. Vaniah Temple)
