Charles Waterhouse at the Home of the Commandants in Washington, D.C., following the funeral service for Waterhouse at Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Va., Feb. 19, 2014. Col. Waterhouse was a combat artist and was seriously injured during the first wave of Iwo Jima. He suffered from severe nerve damage in his left hand but was still able to paint with his right and continued throughout his life to paint artwork up until three weeks before he passed away.
