Maj. Gen. H. Stacy Clardy III speaks to his Marines Jan. 31 during the commemoration of the 4th Marine Regiment Reconstitution at the Beach Head on Camp Hansen. The 4th Marine Regiment was first activated in April 1914, originally as part of the Marine Corps’ Advanced Base Force. 4th Marines has been reconstituted once again, the first time since February 1944 when it was reconstituted on Guadalcanal from units with the 1st Marine Raider Regiment. “Seventy years ago tomorrow, as Marine forces continued their drive across the Pacific, 4th Marine Regiment was re-born on Guadalcanal,” said General John M. Paxton Jr., the assistant commandant of the Marine Corps. “It was reborn from units across the Marine forces to form a regiment that would go forth and distinguish themselves in battle for the rest of the war. The same can be said today.” Currently 4th Marines is reconstituted with three units, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines; 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, and 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, under the unit deployment program. 4th Marine Regiment is one of two infantry regiments assigned to the 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force. Clardy is the commanding general of 3rd Marine Division, III MEF. (Courtesy Photo)
