Recruits of November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, listen as Sgt. Mallory Ortiz, a drill instructor, lists contraband items Feb. 24, 2014, which they are not allowed to have on Parris Island, S.C. Items such as chewing gum, tobacco products and beverages must be thrown away as they are not permitted during training. Recruits receive everything they will need during training, from socks to toothpaste. Unnecessary items, such as their civilian clothing, are stored until the week of graduation. Ortiz, 24, is from Medford, Mass. November Company is scheduled to graduate May 23, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
