Staff Sgt. Michael Meck, drop zone safety officer, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 27th Engineer Battalion, out of Fort Bragg, N.C., continually takes wind measurements with a cup thermo-anemometer at the personnel point of impact. The PPI is identified with an orange raised angle marker and a letter visible to the C-130 pilots flying the mission. Winds calculated from the aircraft and on the ground are crucial to the safety of the mission.
