Electronics Technician 2nd Class John Williams from Austin, Texas, climbs down the ship's forward mast while wearing a self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) aboard USS Bataan (LHD 5). SCBAs are worn aloft because of the proximity of exhaust gases from the ship's stacks. Bataan is the flagship for the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group and, with the embarked 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, is deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
