Rct. Andrew Dudley, Platoon 1018, Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, holds his weapon ready March 11, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Dudley, a 22-year-old from Louisville, Ky., and his fellow recruits advanced down the course while protecting each other from simulated enemy fire. The course was part of Basic Warrior Training, the ninth week of recruit training during which recruits get away from their usual garrison setting and travel to the island’s combat training area to learn basic field and combat skills. Charlie Company is scheduled to graduate April 4, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
