Rct. Gifty Kusi, with Platoon 4010, Oscar Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, focuses on keeping her balance on a Confidence Course obstacle March 19, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. The course is one of many physical training events that challenge recruits throughout boot camp. It is comprised of 15 obstacles designed to physically challenge recruits as well as build confidence. Kusi, who was recruited from Frederick, Md., is a 26-year-old native of Kumasi, Ghana. She is scheduled to be naturalized April 3, 2014, and graduate April 4, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. Vaniah Temple)
