Appleton began his career not as a commissioned naval officer, but as a recruit stepping onto the yellow footprints of Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island in 1976 and at the age of 17. He served for 12 years active and reserve in the Marine Corps and obtained the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. He accepted a commission into the Navy Chaplain Candidate Program in 1988, after feeling a call to ministry and remains on active duty as a chaplain today. Appleton is from Pittsburgh.
