Rct. Katie Ward, Platoon 4016, November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, awaits a command during an initial drill evaluation March 31, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Initial drill takes place in the fifth week of training and marks the transition to the second phase of boot camp. Teamwork will continue to be essential for the recruits to complete training. Ward, a 22-year-old from Big Rapids, Mich., is scheduled to graduate May 23, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
