Aviation electronics technician Petty Officer 2nd Class Mark Helfer, a 28-year-old native of Tampa, Fla., positions a laptop on his chest as he troubleshoots a lighting discrepancy in a SH-60F Seahawk assigned to the "Black Knights" of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 4 in the hangar bay of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. Squadron personnel work night and day shifts to ensure the aircraft within their responsibility are well maintained and ready for operations at a moment?s notice. The Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group is on a routine deployment in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility. Operating in the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean, the U.S. 7th Fleet is the largest of the forward-deployed U.S. fleets covering 53 million square miles, with approximately 50 ships, 120 aircraft and 20,000 Sailors and Marines assigned at any given time.
