Sgt. Andrew Nolley, a martial arts instructor, tests recruits of India Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, on martial arts techniques they had learned earlier in training April 18, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. The recruits spent the weeks prior to the qualification learning and becoming proficient with different techniques in the first level of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. If successful in this test, the recruits earned the right to wear a tan belt, the first level of the program. Nolley is a 25-year-old Atlanta native. India Company is scheduled to graduate June 13, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
