Members of the Public Works Department Great Lakes facility sustainment branch excavate and repair a broken water main at Naval Station Great Lakes in below-freezing conditions. The pipe supplies water to nearby building 7121, USS Mason, which houses Recruits in the process of separating from the Navy. The coldest weather across the Midwest in 13 years likely caused the pipe rupture. Temperatures at the time were four degrees below zero, with a wind chill of 15 degrees below zero.
