Philippine Navy Capt. Ramon C. Renales, left, and U.S. Marine Col. Curtis Lee close a time capsule April 23 during the groundbreaking ceremony of classroom construction at Dona Mercedes Elementary School in Guinobatan, Albay Province, Philippines. The time capsule was filled with small tokens from Philippine and U.S. service members, placed in the ground and buried to be unearthed in the future. The ceremony was one of five celebrating the start of humanitarian civic assistance projects that Philippine and U.S. service-members are working on as a part of Exercise Balikatan. Balikatan is an annual bilateral exercise between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and U.S. armed forces designed to strengthen interoperability and country-to-country relations. Renales is the commanding officer of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Combined Joint Civil Military Operations Task Force, and Lee is the commanding officer of the U.S. forces, CJCMOTF.
