Commander, U.S. Second Fleet, Vice Adm. Melvin Williams Jr. gets acquainted with Dr. Lanier Phillips, a survivor of USS Truxtun (DD 229) at the commissioning of the sixth ship to bear that name, USS Truxtun (DDG 103). Phillips' ship was grounded and sunk between Lawn and St. Lawrence, near Chambers Cove while on an escort mission en route to Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, on Feb. 18, 1942, during World War II. Phillips served as a messman on board and despite the loss of 110 of his shipmates to the elements, he was able to survive the disastrous grounding.
