Soldiers of the 23rd Engineer Company, 6th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Airborne), 2nd Engineer Brigade, U.S. Army Alaska, police expended shells after firing the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, Wednesday, April 23, 2014, on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. The M249 is an American adaptation of the Belgian Fabrique Nationale Herstal Minimi, a light machine gun manufactured by the FN Herstal company, and has seen action in every major conflict involving the United States since the U.S. invasion of Panama in 1989.
