Recruits of Fox Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, swim during a basic water survival qualification May 5, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. The recruits swam 25 meters before moving on to jumping off a 10-foot tower, swimming with a gear pack and shedding combat gear underwater. The recruits must successfully complete each exercise to pass the overall qualification, a graduation requirement. If the recruits become Marines, they will be expected to requalify in water survival regularly. Fox Company is scheduled to graduate July 3, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Octavia Davis)
