A ground-based interceptor missile lifts off from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., Dec. 5, during a live test of the nation's ground-based midcourse defense system. Alaska Army National Guard warfighters from the 49th Missile Defense Battalion at Fort Greely, Alaska, launched and directed the missile from the Fire Control Center Fort Greely, which successfully destroyed a target ballistic missile in space.
