A memento is left by an unknown visitor to the Marine Memorial on Mount Suribachi. The memorial was created in honor of the the flag raising in March of 1945. The flag, raised twice the morning of March 23, 1945 was to signal to the Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal that the Marines of the 2nd Battalion had captured the island.
