Command Sgt. Maj. Francis Thibodeau (left), hands a red spike to 18 year-old Pfc. George Deems. Thibodeau and Deems are both assigned to the 46th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy), which currently serves with Multi-National Division – Baghdad's 926th Engineer Brigade, during a ceremony, Dec. 7. As a tradition, Deems, a native of Malvern, Ark., will keep the "Steel Spike" for a year until the new Guardian is revealed.
