American flags mark the graves of fallen Sailors, Soldiers, Marines and Airmen at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter, R.I., on Memorial Day. This year, Rear Adm. Walter E. “Ted” Carter Jr., president, U.S. Naval War College in Newport, R.I., joined with representatives from the State of Rhode Island, distinguished guests and more than 700 local attendees, to serve as Presiding Officer for the 40th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the cemetery. The event served as an opportunity to commemorate the more than 1.3 million men and women who have died in military service since 1775, and honor the millions of veterans who have served our nation.
