It was on May 13, 1944, that the Allies finally broke through the German Gustav Line, the western segment of the Winter Line, and began their march northward through Italy. The Winter Line was a series of forts and other construction designed to deter exactly this kind of Allied advance. Photos depict a newly-constructed bridge in Italy and a view of Cassino, Italy, during this effort in May 1944. (Photo credit: Agnew Library and Archives Canada)
