U.S. Navy boatswain's mates aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) transport a person in distress on a medical litter on the ship's well deck June 6, 2014, in the Mediterranean Sea. The Bataan provided food, water, medical attention and temporary shelter to about 280 people in distress after receiving a report that an Italian military marine patrol aircraft sighted six small vessels, one of which was sinking. The Bataan, with the embarked 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, was operating in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations to augment U.S. crisis response forces in the region.
