(From left to right) Maj. Gen. Timothy J. Lowenberg, the adjutant general for the Washington National Guard, State Command Sgt. Maj. Kim S. May, the state command sergeant major for the Washington National Guard, Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Sweeney, the 81st Brigade Combat Team, Washington Army National Guard, Col. Christopher Fowler, the deputy commander for the 81st BCT, and Col. Ronald Kapral, the commander of the 81st BCT, bow their heads in prayer after receiving their 81st BCT combat patches during a ceremony Dec. 28, 2008 at Camp Ramadi, Iraq. In a tradition dating back to World War II, combat patches depicting the unit they serve with during wartime are placed on each Soldier's right sleeve. Lowenberg and May participated in this Army tradition while visiting 81st BCT Soldiers in Iraq. More than 3,000 members of the 81st BCT are deployed to various bases across Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in October. This is the second deployment for the 81st BCT.
