Recruits of Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, march to the mess hall on their first official training day June 3, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits finished their first waking hour eating a nutritious breakfast after getting dressed and cleaning their barracks. The formal 70-day training schedule begins about a week after recruits arrive on Parris Island; recruits spend the first week in-processing and learning basic procedures and expectations. Lima Company is scheduled to graduate Aug. 22, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
