Sgt. Joseph Ramey currently serves as a Marine Corps drill instructor with Mike Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. Ramey joined the Marine Corps in February 2008 and became a drill instructor in December 2012. “I became a drill instructor because I wanted to make it harder for [recruits],” said Ramey. “I wanted to make them earn every letter of the word Marines rather than just giving it to them. I still remember almost every single recruit by name and keep in contact with some. I feel like I’ve made a change. They come here undisciplined, disrespectful kids and leave here a basically trained Marine.” Ramey, 25, is a native of Liberty, Ind. About 600 Marine Corps drill instructors shape the approximately 20,000 recruits who come to Parris Island annually into basic United States Marines. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
