Staff Sgt. Jason Mathews, the 3rd Recruit Training Battalion drillmaster, evaluates Rct. Edward Bianco, Platoon 3069, Mike Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, on his performance of a close-order drill movement July 9, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits such as Bianco, 18, from Canaan, N.H. will be graded by Mathews, 32, from Roberta, Ga., on their discipline, bearing and attention to detail during their initial drill evaluation in the fifth week of training. Mike Company is scheduled to graduate Sept. 12, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
