About 50 Marines from Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division participated in a live fire range July 16 at Camp Lejeune, N.C. The Marines employed the M252 81 mm mortar to fire high explosive rounds and illumination rounds. The range took place during evening hours to give the Marines a chance to practice firing using light from their illumination rounds. The Marines set up six mortars and broke into teams of about five, taking turns firing on targets radioed in from the forward observers. The Marines worked quickly, sometimes firing multiple rounds per minute. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Ryan Young/ released)
