Sgt. Brenda Carino, a drill instructor for Platoon 4033, Oscar Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, encourages her recruits to push through physical exhaustion Aug. 5, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. The drill instructor is the central figure for recruits; it’s their job to lead by example as a teacher and a mentor. Recruits participate in more than 30 physical training sessions meant to help them meet the Marine Corps’ high fitness standards. Carino, 25, is from Santa Barbara, Calif. Oscar Company is scheduled to graduate Sept. 19, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. Vaniah Temple)
