James Tanner, pictured here, was a Civil War veteran, teacher, lawyer, public servant and staunch advocate for veterans rights. As a stenographer, he was present when President Abraham Lincoln died, taking statements from witnesses. The "old ampitheater" in Arlington National Cemetery was renamed in honor of Tanner and now bears his name. (Photo courtesy of the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center)
