A Smokey Sam is launched during exercise Scorpion Fire in the Chocolate Mountain Aerial Gunnery Ranges, Calif., near Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz., Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014. Smokey Sams are used to safely simulate ground-to-air missiles fired at military aircraft. The MCAS Yuma range support department sets up and operates Smokey Sams, numerous different targets, and other range equipment to provide a worthwhile, realistic training experience for soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines.
