Recruits of November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, practice navigating using only a compass and map during land navigation training Aug. 11, 2014, as part of Basic Warrior Training on Parris Island, S.C. Teams of recruits got a map, a compass and a set of coordinates before venturing into the woods to find specific locations. This practical application training ensures the recruits can navigate foreign terrain in case electronic navigation should fail. Held during the 10th week on Parris Island, BWT introduces recruits to basic field skills all Marines must know. November Company is scheduled to graduate Sept. 5, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
