Paratroopers with the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, along with Airmen of the 3rd Air Support Operations Squadron assigned to the Spartan Brigade, tour the former Japanese navy underground headquarters during a Battle of Okinawa staff ride on Okinawa, Japan, Aug. 23, 2014. The commanding officer’s room (above), center of operations and staff room remain in this underground facility, which are reminiscent of the wartime era. Lasting 82 days from April to late June 1945, the Battle of Okinawa was the last major battle of the Pacific Theater during World War II before Japan’s surrender in September and was the costliest battle of the Pacific for both sides. Elements of the Spartan Brigade are in Okinawa participating in Exercise Ulchi-Freedom Guardian 2014, a joint/combined command post exercise designed to enhance the Republic of South Korea’s defensive capabilities in the face of an aggressor threat.
