    III Marine Expeditionary Force

Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class Daniel Torrentes signals an approaching helicopter during a replenishment-at-sea (RAS) aboard the Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62). U.S. Navy surface combatants along with Military Sealift Command fleet logistics ships, reporting to Commander, Joint Task Force 70 and 73, respectively, as part of Commander, Task Force 73, conducted a simulated submarine threat exercise during this regularly scheduled RAS as part of Valiant Shield. Valiant Shield is a U.S.-only exercise integrating 18,000 U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army and Marine Corps personnel, more than 200 aircraft and 19 surface ships, offering real-world joint operational experience to develop capabilities that provide a full range of options to defend U.S. interests and those of its allies and partners.
