When operating, the window view of the M1271 Mine Clearing Vehicle is filled with rocks and dust kicking up from the ground due to the rapidly-rotating arm with chains and hammers designed to strike and disable mines. For this reason, an area clearance platoon uses "spotters" stationed in other vehicles to tell the clearing vehicle driver which direction to go across a mine field.
