Col. Robert T. Ault, commander, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, awards more than 60 Soldiers Humanitarian Service Medals for their relief efforts during the 2013 floods in Boulder, Colo., and the surrounding areas, at McMahon Auditorium, Dec. 22, 2014. The Soldiers were pivotal contributors to the largest airlift evacuation since Hurricane Katrina. Additionally they volunteered more than 560 hours outside of military operations to help with the recovery of the communities affected by last year’s natural disasters in Colorado. The Humanitarian Service Medal is a military service medal of the U.S. Armed Forces created Jan. 19, 1977, by President Gerald Ford under Executive Order 11965. This medal is awarded to any member of the U.S. military – including Reserve and National Guard members – who distinguish themselves by meritorious participation in specified military acts or operations of a humanitarian nature.
