Staff Sgt. Shawn Riley, supply sergeant for Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, was awarded the Soldier's Medal by Maj. Gen. James Hoyer, the adjutant general for the W.Va. Army National Guard on Jan. 11, 2015, at Camp Dawson, W.Va. In August 2011, Riley intervened to help a Preston County Sheriff Deputy Thomas Mitter contain a man who was attacking him with a weed eater in the middle of the road and tried to reach for his pistol. The deputy was running out of options after an exhausting fight, and Riley's actions help save Mitter's life and the attacker. The Soldier's Medal is awarded to any person of the Armed Forces who, while serving in any capacity with the Army, distinguished themselves by heroism, which included personal hazard or danger and voluntary risk of life, not involving actual conflict with an enemy (Photo by Army Sgt.
