Senior Master Sgt. Lindsay Cunningham and 106th Rescue Wing Commander Col. Thomas J. Owens pose for a portrait with Tuskegee Airman William Joseph Johnson on Feb. 7, 2015. Cadet Johnson was born in North Carolina and his family moved to Glen Cove in 1929. In 1941, Johnson passed his flying exam and applied to the Army Air Corps flight program, receiving his training in Tuskegee, Ala. After the war, Johnson went to work at Grumman, where he retired in 1990.
